Feathers and skulls - work in progress

40" x 40" oil on wood
Aztec-inspired woman. (yes, she's modeled after the beautiful Adriana Lima). Dang, those Brazilians! Sooo gorgeous. But of course she'll be covered in tattoos when I'm done with her ;) I've also been playing with the idea of using some gold leaf on this piece, Klimt has inspired me..

On another note, I'm putting together an F.A.Q post. I've been getting a lot of the same questions about my wood painting techniques so I figured I'd put all the answers in one place. What other sort of (art-related) questions would you like to see answered?

And prints of Boat Shoulders will be in my shop by Thursday, stay tuned

How did you start out and how did you become so successful?

I'm trying to, I suppose, break into the whole scene but I'm just starting out and I've admired your work for a while. The tips and advice would be great help! Thank you!

Great work :) Would love to know where you began for those interested in painting in terms of types of paint and materials for those who have no idea where to start! Also what is the most important thing to you in terms of mixing mediums such as paints, oils, and india inks.

No questions here, but this might me your best work in my eyes. It's looking absolutely divine! You just keep getting better, coming back with a surprise every time.
And again thanks for removing the ad.

Dang girl. It seems like every time you crank out another lady she is better than the last. I'm enjoying watching this happen so much!

I'd love to know what kind of paint you use, I mean oils obv but do you have a favourite brand? I've been using water based oils just because then my house doesnt smell of turps [and they dry like 230479167 times faster] , but might mix it up a bit and get back to proper oils.

Those feathers are incredible and I love your painting corner!

gorgeous work as always!
and for the FAQ i would love to know how you prepare your wood surfaces for painting. i think you might have answered this one already but i can't seem to find it. :(

This is amazing!

I'm glad you're putting a FAQ together! But painting is the easy part for me... I'd love to hear more about your drawing and reference process. Drawing people and making them look representative of my reference is an ongoing issue for me. I've been contemplating the use of an art projector, but I don't know...

Art related question: where did you learn to paint? How did you learn about light?

Oh wow, this is going to look amazing when it's done! So beautiful :)

And, on a random note, I'm hosting a Mustachioed Coffee Cup Set Giveaway on my blog just in case you wanted to enter!

Your art is breath taking!

I am so excited for the FAQ. I use mix media, mostly acrylics, india ink and markers. Just like someone else said in a previous comment I can handle the painting part although not as good as I wish yet, but my biggest frustration is going from sketch to paint.

My sketches tend to be very small and is hard for me to recreate them on big wood pieces, are you simply extremely talented? and do it by looking or do you use other techniques? was this something that frustrated you to but have overcome?

Oh and what brand of oil paint do you use?

thank you!!

As a FAQ, have info about your post production techniques: getting high rez images of your paintings for prints.
I'd love to learn more about your process of scanning large paintings in sections then piecing together in photoshop. A while back you had posted a screen shot of this and frankly it looked bonkers! What tool do you use to smooth the sections together so well? Are you still doing things this way?
thanks!

p.s. You are fabulous and very inspiring!
